Bees Don’t See Borders, and That’s a Beautiful Thing

Strong bees. Strong food. Strong communities. Stronger together.

Every time I step into a garden and hear that familiar hum moving among the flowers, I am reminded of something wonderfully simple.

Bees don’t see borders.

They don’t know where one property ends and another begins. They don’t recognize county lines, state lines, or national boundaries. They don’t know which farmer planted the field or who owns the orchard blooming beyond the fence.

They know flowers.

They know sunlight and rain. They know the changing seasons. They know when the clover opens, when the fruit trees blossom, and when the last asters and goldenrods of autumn offer one final feast before winter.

And everywhere they go, they carry something with them.

Pollen. Life. Possibility.

A bee may leave one place carrying pollen gathered somewhere else, then unknowingly help create a berry, an apple, a squash, a cucumber, a seed, or the beginning of another generation of flowers.

There is something beautifully New Earth about that.

The bee takes what it needs, gives something in return, and leaves the world more abundant because it passed through.

We Are More Connected Than We Realize

We tend to think of gardens as individual places. My garden. *Your farm. *Their orchard.

But a pollinator sees something entirely different. To a bee, all those places are pieces of one enormous living landscape.

The flowers growing beside a country road may sustain a bee on its way to an orchard. A backyard patch of clover may provide food between larger blooms. A neighbor’s native garden may help sustain the same pollinators that eventually arrive among your squash blossoms.

Even a balcony filled with flowering herbs can become a tiny rest stop in that larger network.

Our gardens are connected whether we realize it or not. So are our farms, communities and, ultimately, so are our food systems.

Across the Border, the Bees Keep Working

That interconnectedness doesn’t suddenly stop at the border between communities, counties, states or even between the United States and Canada.

Beekeepers in both countries are part of a much larger North American agricultural and ecological system. Honey, equipment, knowledge, breeding stock, agricultural products and generations of beekeeping experience move through interconnected markets and communities. Healthy beekeeping industries help support healthy agricultural systems, and healthy agricultural landscapes help support bees.

What happens to beekeepers on one side of a border can create ripples on the other.

That is why cooperation matters.

Canada and the United States may be two countries, but our ecosystems never agreed to those boundaries.

Birds migrate across them. Butterflies cross them. Water crosses them. Weather crosses them. Seeds cross them. Wildlife crosses them. 

And pollinators continue doing what nature has always asked them to do: participate in a living system much larger than themselves.

There is an important lesson in that.

We can draw lines on a map without pretending the living Earth stops at those lines.

Protecting pollinators cannot be an American goal or a Canadian goal.

It has to be a shared goal.

Bees Do Far More Than Make Honey

When most people think about honeybees, they naturally think about honey. But honey is only one part of their story.

Bees and other pollinators help plants reproduce. As they move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they transfer pollen between blossoms.

That simple interaction supports an extraordinary amount of life, which is turn supports even more life. 

Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, berries and wildflowers are all plants that provide food and habitat for wildlife and humans alike as well as plants that eventually produce seeds for another generation.

Not every crop requires bees. Many staple grains are primarily wind-pollinated, and our food system would not simply disappear without honeybees.

But the diversity, nutrition and abundance of our food would be profoundly different without pollinators.

Apples, blueberries, strawberries, melons, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, almonds and countless other foods benefit tremendously from pollination.

And bees are not doing this work alone.

The Pollinator Community

One of my favorite things about a garden is realizing how many different workers arrive when we create the right habitat.

Honeybees may be the most familiar, but look closer.

You may find bumblebees lumbering between blossoms.

Tiny native bees disappearing into flowers you barely noticed.

Butterflies drifting through the garden.

Moths arriving as daylight fades.

Beetles crawling through blooms.

Hummingbirds visiting tubular flowers.

And after darkness falls, bats become important pollinators in many parts of the world while also performing other vital ecological work.

A healthy garden isn't built around one species. It is a community.

That is another principle we can carry into New Earth gardening:

We don't have to choose between helping honeybees and helping native pollinators. We can build habitat for all of them.

What If Every Garden Became a Pollinator Station?

This is where the story becomes hopeful.

Because helping pollinators isn't something reserved for governments, commercial farmers, scientists or professional beekeepers.

We can all participate right outside our doors. You don't need several acres. You don't even need one acre. You might have a backyard, a raised bed, a patio, a balcony, a church garden, a school courtyard, a community garden or simply enough room for a few pots.

Start there.

One flowering plant may seem insignificant to you but it is NOT insignificant to the bee that finds it.

Seven Things You Can Do for Bees Right Now

1. Plant something that blooms.

Better yet, plant several things that bloom at different times of year.

Pollinators need food throughout the growing season, not only during the spectacular spring bloom.

Try to create a succession from early spring through late autumn.

2. Include native plants.

Native pollinators evolved alongside native plants. Adding native flowers, shrubs and trees can provide valuable food and habitat while supporting the larger ecosystem around your garden.

3. Let a little wildness remain.

A New Earth garden doesn't have to look neglected, but it doesn't have to be sterile either.

Allow some clover. Leave a patch of native wildflowers. Let some herbs flower. Allow a corner of the property to become habitat.

Sometimes what humans call messy is exactly what another species calls home.

4. Be extremely thoughtful about pesticides and herbicides.

Before spraying something, ask what else might encounter it.

Could a bee land on that flower tomorrow? Could a butterfly caterpillar eat that leaf? Could rain carry it somewhere else?

Whenever possible, choose gardening methods that work with the ecosystem rather than trying to sterilize it.

5. Give pollinators water.

Bees need water too.

A shallow container with stones, pebbles or other safe landing places can become a simple pollinator watering station. Keep the water fresh and make sure insects can drink without drowning.

6. Give native bees places to live.

Not every bee lives in a hive.

Many native bees nest in the ground. Others use hollow stems, small cavities or dead wood.

Leaving small areas of undisturbed soil and some natural plant material can provide nesting habitat we often accidentally remove.

7. Support beekeepers.

When possible, buy honey and other hive products directly from reputable local and regional beekeepers. Talk to them. Learn from them. Ask about their bees.

These men and women aren't simply producing jars of honey. They are caring for living colonies through heat, cold, drought, pests, disease, changing landscapes and increasingly unpredictable conditions.

Keeping beekeeping viable matters more than most people think about.

And Don't Forget the Night Shift

There is another part of the pollinator world that we often forget because we are sleeping while they work.

Nighttime pollinators need us too.

Moths and other nocturnal insects navigate landscapes very differently from daytime pollinators, and excessive artificial light can interfere with those natural behaviors.

So helping pollinators also means thinking about what happens in our gardens after sunset.

Use outdoor lighting only where it is truly needed. Keep it low. Keep it warm rather than bright white. Shield it downward. Use timers or motion sensors when possible.

Allow darkness to return to the garden. A garden doesn't stop living when we go inside for the night. It simply changes shifts.

Maybe the Bees Are Showing Us Something

The longer I work with animals and gardens, the more convinced I become that nature is constantly demonstrating another way of living.

Not through competition alone but through relationships. The flower feeds the bee. The bee helps create the seed. The seed becomes another plant. The plant feeds something else. Something else carries its seeds farther. Leaves fall. Fungi and microorganisms break them down. Nutrients return to the soil and life begins again.

No single piece accomplishes everything. 

It works because millions of relationships are happening at once.

Perhaps that is one of the things we have forgotten.

We are part of that system too.

A Little Hope for Our New Earth

Imagine what could happen if millions of us planted just a little more for pollinators.

One yard becomes habitat, then another.

A school plants a pollinator garden.

A church lets part of its property become meadow.

A farmer preserves a flowering border.

A town plants native flowers instead of another strip of ornamental grass.

Someone puts herbs on an apartment balcony and lets the basil flower.

Someone else turns off unnecessary outdoor lights.

Another person buys a jar of honey from the beekeeper down the road.

None of those actions alone changes the world but together, they begin changing the landscape of the entire world as we know it.

That is how I see the New Earth being built anyway.

Not through one enormous act performed only by one extraordinary person, or twenty, but through millions of ordinary acts of restoration performed by people who finally understand that their little piece of Earth is connected to everyone else's.

The bees already understand this.

They cross our gardens, farms, communities and boundaries without ever asking who owns the flower. They simply participate in creating abundance. Maybe that's why I love listening to them so much.

That little hum in the garden sounds different once you understand what you're hearing. It is thousands of tiny wings working for tomorrow.

The bees don't see borders.

Maybe, when it comes to caring for this Earth and one another, neither should we.
